Built in 1912, the Peter MacKinnon Building is said to be home to the ghost of the first history department head Arthur Silver Morton, who suddenly died one night in the building. In the University of Saskatchewan's 106-year history, there have been thousands of students and faculty members that have walked the grounds, studied in the lecture.

The Peter MacKinnon Building serves as a memorial to much of the University's history: numerous plaques to individuals and organizations can be found in its interior. In 1997, the University created "Nobel Plaza" in front of the building, honouring two Nobel Laureates associated with the University: Gerhard Herzberg and Henry Taube.

The 58-foot-long neon sculpture, created by visual artist Wally Dion, was installed this month outside the Peter MacKinnon Building, in the Nobel Plaza facing The Bowl area. When lit at night, the glow of the neon is reminiscent of a fiery prairie sunset—a nod to a sense of place, perhaps, but created with a modern aesthetic that contrasts.

Designed by Brown and Vallance, Montreal architects, the College Building (now the Peter MacKinnon Building) was constructed from 1910-12 by Smith Bros. and Wilson general contractors.
